Milton Herhsey as a Child
Milton Snavely Hershey was born in the small town of Derry Township, Pennsylvania on September 13, 1857. Henry and (Veronica) Fanny Hershey were overjoyed to receive this newborn baby. Milton's father, Henry, was constantly exploring get cash fast jobs to try to support his family, unfortunately making his family move wherever his next job would be, whether coal mining or working in oil wells. The Hershey family moved to Titusville,
Pennsylvania to pursue work in the all popular oil. It was a smelly, crude town and they moved out of it when he was just three years old. After that they moved to a small log cabin. Fanny called it "The Little Stony Farm", partly because she did not like the place. Milton's parents did not have a good relationship, and fought constantly. Milton went to a one room schoolhouse, which he didn't enjoy. He dropped out of school at age 13, and began a job running a printing press, which he was fired from because he was very mischievous and dropped his hat into the printing press on purpose. He then took up a job at Royers Ice Cream and Candy, where he became an apprentice at the age of 14. He learned the art of making sweets, which he would use in his later life and career.
