Hershey Chocolate Factory
Milton Hershey was on a roll, but he wanted to pursue a new
sweet, chocolate. He made a bold move in selling his Lancaster’s Carmel Company with his Crystal A Carmel for one million dollars. He started the Hershey Chocolate Company, and was an immediate hit. Cumin Cigars, Heroes of Vanilla, Lady Fingers, Lobsters, Rolie Polies, McGinties, and Jim Cracks were some of the many types of candy he sold at Hershey Chocolate Company. He also started to make Hershey chocolate bars. Milton now had more money to expand and to hire new employees. Milton was living the high life, and he met a candy shop sales
girl named Catherine Sweeny. They got married on May 25, 1898. With business booming it was time to expand. He moved to the countryside where he was born Derry Township, and built his factory. He liked the location because of its natural resources such as water and milk. He also liked the railway system nearby, good for transportation of supplies. The factory, opened in 1905, was as big as two football fields, and could hold up to 600 workers at a time. But he wasn't done there. He wanted to create a place for his workers to live, for their families to grow up. He created the first suburbs, revolutionizing the way we do business today. He wanted all of the houses to look different, giving uniqueness to the new town. He also put his own house within walking distance, so he could balance work and home easily. He built parks, golf courses and even a zoo all for the comfort of his employees.
